Parks and Recreation Structures
   (Hardbound Version)

Patterns from the Golden Age of Rustic Design (Softbound Version)

reprint of the 1938 National Park Service
CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), Albert Good

This is 3 books reprinted as one.
Details and chronicles:

  • Lodges
  • Out buildings
  • Bridges
  • Furniture
  • Sign boards
  • and many more of the National Parks' structures of that era.

Structures  were heavy to log and stone.
Lots of pictures, sketches, plans.
Log builders, designers, architects and contractors will find this a great book.
The 3 volumes are bound as one for a 600 page behemoth
This is truly a one of a kind book.

Includes lots of basic floor plans for many of the lodges, residences, cabins and outbuildings that you'll find in our National Forests.

The difference between the Hardbound and the Softbound are primarily different publishers of the same book. We've heard the photo quality in the softbound is slightly reduced (we didn't have a Hardbound available at the time this was written), however the sketches and text are plenty good...remember the photos were taken in the 30's so all black and white.

The Log Cabin
An adventure in self-reliance, individualism, and cabin building

by Len McDougall

Almost every man (women are saner) dreams, at least once in his life, of getting away from it all, deep into the woods, and going it alone. Expert tracker and woodsman Len McDougall shows us the way in The Log Cabin, an extraordinary blend of how-to manual and memoir of resilience that will surely fascinate, perhaps repel, and maybe even inspire the reader to take a chance on a little more self-reliance-if not in the woods, then in everyday living.
Like a rougher modern-day Thoreau in less bucolic surrounds, Len McDougall takes the path of solitude, marching to his own drummer, and finds himself, like Thoreau, at once in awe of the phenomena of nature-large and small-and ever more aware of his essential separation from nature and from civilization.

Len McDougall has written several books and dozens of articles on topics relating to the outdoors. Len teaches outdoor survival and has more than 30 years experience in the North Woods. Len is also a professional photographer and illustrator.

The Owner-Built Log House
Living in Harmony with your environment.

by B. Allan Mackie.

Allan Mackie's newest book. Allan Mackie believes - and demonstrates in this book - that attitude is at least as important as carpentry skills. Given a will to learn and a desire to make something of one's own, the average person is more than capable of building a log house that will serve an individual, couple, or family for years to come.
Hundreds of photographs and detailed drawings take the reader step by step through the log home building process:

  • Selecting the land
  • Purchasing and preparing the logs
  • And all the other steps involved.
As a unique feature of the book, the author takes us through his current log home building project on a 100 acre wilderness site. The reader experiences the entire process - from buying the land right up to moving in and spending that first winter.

This is so much more than a how-to book that we have included it here.
Softbound / 232 Pages.
