Wool Insulation

Wool Batts and Wool Rope Available in both "rope" for notches and laterals, and "batts" for notches, peak walls, attics, floors.
Environmentally friendly, flame resistant, superior insulation, natural sound blocker, repels pests, non-carcinogenic, recyclable. The additive used to make our wool fire resistant and to repel vermin and insects is Boron a naturally occurring element found in the earth.

Estimating Amounts Needed

Log laterals and notches:

Take the length of each log wall and add 3' to the length to compensate for the notch area (if using in the notch area).  Add all log wall lengths together to get a total lineal feet of log per round. Multiply by the number of logs high to get a total lineal footage.

  • If using original wool rope, divide by 50'/Lb. (if only 1 length of rope is needed to fill the lateral).  Double or triple  that if two or three lengths of rope are being used.
  • If using the newer denser style wool rope (actually wool batts cut 4" wide and lofting to 2" tall), figure on 11' per pound and only in the rarest cases will you need more than 1 run of rope in a lateral.

Cathedral Ceilings, frame/stud walls:

  • The original batt is approximately 1-3 lb. batts, measuring approximately 6'L x 1.5'W x 3"...(when you open one up fully, it looks like it could be used to stuff a comforter). Good for using in notches.
  • The newer batt is available in either 14-1/2" or 22-1/2" widths and rolls are 24' long. Thickness is approximately 2" (R Value is roughly calculated at R7.5 per 2" of thickness).

Wool Batts for Frame and Timber-Frame Homes:

  • Add separately the total wall, roof and floor square footage to be insulated.
  • For 16" centers divide the square feet by 87 to get the total number of 14-1/2"  bags needed and then multiply by the number of 2" layers needed.
  • For 24" centers divide the square feet by 90 to get the total number of 22-1/2" bags needed and then multiply by the number of 2" layers needed.
NOTE: Wool is light enough that approximately 20lbs ships as a 30lb package (UPS os1)

Wool Rope
cc0013-rope-original

Original wool rope insulation is
2-3" wide x 1-2" high
and has  50 lineal feet per pound.
(measurements are approximate)

With this style rope you'll use 1-4 layers to fill a lateral depending on the lateral width.

NOTE: We'll fill the order as close as we can, however bags are often filled to a partial pound quantity (e.g. 7 lbs-12 oz.), thus we'll adjust you're order (slightly) to show the true weight of product being shipped.

Dense  wool rope insulation is
4" wide x  2" high.
Each roll is approximately 33 lf. and there are 12 rolls per bag.
That's approximately  11-13 lineal feet per pound.

Our "dense" Rope is actually 4" wide by 2" thick strips of the new "dense" Batt insulation (shown below).
Works great in laterals without the need to double up.

wool batt insulation comes in approximately
1 to 5 lb. batts:
measuring (very approximately) 6'L x 1.5'W x 3"H.

This batt is pure sheep's wool with only borates added to protect from moths etc. Batts appears to be sized to be used in quilt making...you'll need to refold to get to fit into a standard wall space.

NOTE: We'll fill the order as close as we can, however bags are often filled to a partial pound quantity (e.g. 4 lbs-12 oz.), thus we'll adjust you're order (slightly) to show the true weight of product being shipped.
